How to cut seedlings for summer grapes

In the summer, green shoot cuttings are typically taken from grapevines that have not yet fully lignified or are only partially lignified. These cuttings can be planted in the same year’s fall, significantly shortening the nursery cycle. The seedlings produced through this method tend to have a high survival rate and superior quality, making them widely used in commercial grape propagation. The best time for taking cuttings is between June and August, ideally during the peak of summer when the shoots have developed 5 to 10 nodes and are semi-lignified—meaning they have some firmness and maturity, which helps in successful rooting. Before cutting, it's beneficial to perform a yellowing treatment on the selected shoots. Three weeks prior to the actual cutting, cover the new shoots with black cloth or thick paper to block direct sunlight. This process helps reduce the green coloration and encourages root development by promoting physiological changes in the shoots. For the cutting site, choose a well-drained, fertile sandy loam or light clay soil. Prepare a raised bed that is 1 to 1.2 meters wide. Ensure the area receives ample sunlight and has easy access to both irrigation and drainage systems. When preparing the cuttings, select stems that are 15 to 20 cm long. Make a slant cut at the base to increase the surface area for root formation. Cut just above the upper node, leaving about 1 cm of space. Remove the lower leaves to ensure good contact with the soil, and leave 1 to 2 leaves at the top. If the leaves are large, you can cut them in half to reduce transpiration. Insert the cuttings into the bed with a spacing of 10 to 15 cm between each one. After planting, water the cuttings thoroughly to ensure full contact with the soil. Construct a temporary shade structure that is 0.8 to 1 meter high, matching the width of the bed. This will protect the cuttings from excessive sun exposure. Once the cuttings have established roots and are thriving, remove the shade to allow full sunlight.
