Pond Culture

(1) The conditions and requirements for aquaculture ponds are essential for successful fish farming. Adult ponds typically range from 5 to 10 mu, with an ideal size of 3 to 5 mu. The water depth should be between 1.5 and 2.5 meters. Sandy loam soil is the best choice due to its good drainage and stability. Water quality parameters are crucial: dissolved oxygen levels should remain above 6.5 mg/L, ammonia concentration must not exceed 0.3 mg/L, and the pH level should be maintained between 7.5 and 8.5. These factors ensure a healthy environment for fish growth.


(2) Before stocking, it’s important to prepare the pond properly. This includes sterilizing the area and refilling it according to standard marine aquaculture practices. Fertilization of new water should be done 7 to 10 days before planting to promote plankton growth. A pre-drainage of 70 to 80 cm is recommended to raise the water temperature more quickly, which helps in early fish development.


(3) Fish stocking specifications and density play a key role in productivity. Fish should be selected with a tail weight of 1.9 to 4.3 grams. The stocking density is generally around 1500 per mu. Choosing the right size and density ensures that fish have enough space and resources to grow efficiently without overcrowding.


(4) During the cultivation period, regular monitoring of the pond is essential. Water quality must be strictly controlled, and any issues should be addressed immediately. Daily feeding should be around 2 to 5% of the fish's body weight. Feeding is usually done twice a day—once in the morning between 8 and 9 am, and once in the afternoon between 3 and 4 pm. It’s important to feed regularly, consistently, and in measured amounts. Maintaining a water level of about 2 meters and exchanging 20% of the water daily helps keep the environment clean. Regular cleaning of the pond, removing weeds, macroalgae, and leftover feed is also necessary. Medication should be used periodically for disease prevention, and any signs of illness should be investigated promptly. Keeping detailed records of all activities is highly recommended.


Cage Culture


(1) Stocking specifications and density vary depending on the stage of fish growth. In redfish cage culture, two main stages are considered: the middle cultivation stage of seedlings and the growing stage. For seedling mid-cultivation, fish with a length of 2.5 cm are preferred. At a water temperature of 23 to 28°C, they can grow to about 6 cm within 30 to 40 days. The maximum stocking density for this stage is 1500 per cubic meter. In the growing stage, fish measuring 6 cm are stocked at a density of 60 to 100 per cubic meter, with an ideal range of 20 to 30 per cubic meter.


(2) Daily management of cages involves regular safety checks to prevent fish from escaping. Inspections should be conducted frequently to ensure the cage structure remains intact. Detailed records should be kept, including feeding activity, fish behavior, water temperature, salinity, mortality rates, weather changes, and fish growth. Growth should be measured every 10 to 15 days, and any damage to the cage should be repaired promptly.


(3) Removing attachments from cages is an important maintenance task. Common attachments include algae, bryozoans, sponges, ascidians, and sediments. These can be removed manually, but using high-pressure water guns or submersible pumps is more effective for thorough cleaning. It's important to clean the cages regularly and avoid replacing them unless absolutely necessary.


Feeding

There are two types of feed commonly used: small trash fish and compound feed. When using trash fish, freshness is critical to ensure optimal nutrition and reduce the risk of disease. The daily feeding amount should be 2 to 5% of the fish's body weight, and feeding is typically done twice a day. Consistent feeding schedules help maintain stable growth and health in the fish population.
