For small vegetable plots, creating shaded areas is a practical solution. Farmers can use branches or grass mats to provide partial shade over the plants. Another option is to build temporary small sheds covered with shade nets, which not only helps lower temperatures but also protects crops from intense sunlight and heavy rain. In regions where cabbages, celery, broccoli, and other leafy vegetables are grown during hot seasons, shading becomes essential. Constructing a simple shed with a shade net on the outside can significantly reduce heat stress while offering protection from harsh weather conditions. Covering the ground with grass or straw is another effective method. Whether starting seeds traditionally or using seedling trays, after sowing and watering, covering the seedbeds with thin layers of grass or hay helps retain moisture and keep the soil cool, which greatly improves germination rates. Once about 60% of the seedlings have emerged, the cover should be removed gradually, allowing the young plants to acclimate to light and avoid sun damage. Increasing the number of leaves on the plant itself can also help provide natural shade. For example, when pruning tomatoes in summer, it's advisable to leave two layers of leaves above the fruit cluster. Similarly, for peppers, leaving two leaves before pinching the top can help regulate temperature. In the case of watermelons, farmers often use the vine leaves to cover the fruit, which provides both cooling and protection. Watering techniques can also play a key role in managing heat. During hot summer days, it’s best to cover the soil surface with wheat straw or bran, along with a thin layer of dry soil, to minimize evaporation and keep the ground cooler. Watering should be done early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid excessive evaporation. During rainy periods, proper drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogging, and after rain, using well water to irrigate can help lower the temperature in the fields. Sprinkler irrigation can also help reduce ground temperature and increase humidity around the plants. Intercropping is another useful practice. Some farmers grow corn between sweet pepper rows, taking advantage of the corn’s shading effect to lower the temperature in the pepper field. This method not only helps with cooling but also maximizes land use efficiently. By implementing these strategies, farmers can better manage the challenges of summer heat and ensure healthier, more productive vegetable crops.
