Lion-headed goose feeding technology

Ryegrass is a highly nutritious feed for geese, offering excellent palatability and soft leaves that leave no fluff. It can be consumed entirely by geese, with a feeding intake reaching up to 100%. Typically, geese raised on ryegrass reach a weight of 70 kilograms within 70 days, requiring approximately 180-200 kilograms of fresh ryegrass during this period. (1) Breeding Methods for Ryegrass-fed Geese 1. Feeding Young Goslings: Goslings one month old have underdeveloped digestive systems, so fresh grass must be cut into small pieces (1-2 cm) and mixed with a small amount of concentrate. The ratio of grass to concentrate should be about 10:1—meaning 10 kg of grass with 1 kg of concentrate. Feed them 4-5 times daily, gradually increasing the amount as they grow. 2. Feeding Chinese Geese: At two months old, geese grow rapidly and consume large amounts of food. During this stage, ensure a constant supply of fresh ryegrass. Provide 15-20 kg per day, with a mix of 14 kg ryegrass and 1 kg concentrate to meet their nutritional needs. Cut the grass into 2-3 cm pieces for easier consumption. 3. Feeding Mature Geese: After 60 days, each goose can consume 2-2.5 kg of ryegrass daily. Reduce concentrate use further and increase cooked sweet potatoes to promote weight gain and improve meat quality. (2) Important Considerations for Rye Grass Feeding 1. Goslings can start eating chopped ryegrass from their third day of life. When using ryegrass, it's important to add some concentrates. Simply feeding with grass alone is not recommended. Always chop the ryegrass before feeding. 2. Freshly harvested ryegrass has high moisture content. Allow it to dry in the sun or after rain before feeding to avoid loose stools in geese. 3. When large quantities of feed are available, geese may not finish all at once. Leftover grass can become trampled, leading to waste or pollution. To prevent this, add a small amount of straw to the feeding area. 4. Increase meal frequency to support growth. Lion head geese have strong appetites and tend to get hungry quickly. Adding an extra meal at noon with some concentrate can speed up growth, improve fertility, and shorten the time required for meat production. 5. During the late growth phase of ryegrass, before spring plowing in the second year, any remaining fresh grass can be harvested. For silage preparation, refer to other resources for detailed methods. (3) Trials on Ryegrass-based Goose Rearing and Meat Production To understand the body size and meat yield of lion head geese, and to explore the economic value of raising geese on winter-planted multi-flower ryegrass, three experimental sites were set up in Houjia, Chikeng, and Yangdong of Lianrao Town from December 16, 1999, to January 18, 2000. The results showed that under semi-grazing conditions with proper compound feed, meat geese reached market weight between 31 and 64 days. Compared to green vegetables, ryegrass provided a daily weight gain of 92 grams. The carcass slaughter rate increased by 1%, economic income rose by 74 yuan, and each 121 kg of ryegrass resulted in an additional 1 kg of meat. 2. Hybrid Pennisetum Goose Technology Hybrid pennisetum is ideal for feeding goslings and geese. When stems are not yet on the ground, geese can graze freely or be fed cut grass of 1-2 cm length. A mixture of 20%-50% grass with 75%-80% other feeds is commonly used. 3. Gram Straw Goose Feeding Technology Gram straw is a perennial legume forage rich in nutrients, with crude protein content up to 15%, twice that of rice. It is considered a high-quality feed for geese. However, it usually yields only one or two harvests per year, with low productivity. In Daejeon, average yields are around 400-500 kg of hay, while high-yield areas may produce 800-1,000 kg. The stems of gram straw are hard and fibrous, making them difficult for geese to digest. Therefore, direct green feeding is generally not advised. Instead, we typically process dry stems and flowers with corn, bran, and wheat flour in a ratio of 15%-20% (i.e., 80%-85% concentrate and 15%-20% grass powder) to create a balanced feed for geese.
