Three keys to feeding pheasants

The hatching of pheasant eggs, also referred to as pheasant chicks, requires careful management for successful results. While chicken eggs can also be used for hatching, pheasant eggs should be prioritized for this purpose. The incubation period for pheasants typically lasts 24 days. During the first 20 days, the temperature should be maintained at 37.5°C with a relative humidity of 65 to 70%. From day 21 to 24, the temperature should be slightly reduced to 37°C to prepare for hatching. Brooding is essential in the early stages of chick development, with temperature control being the most critical factor. For the first 1–3 days, the ideal temperature is 34–35°C. As the chicks grow older, the temperature should gradually decrease: 33–34°C for days 4–5, 32–33°C for days 6–8, 31–32°C for days 9–20, and 26–28°C for chicks aged 21–60 days. Light exposure is also important during the first 10 days, with continuous 24-hour lighting. After that, light duration should be reduced by 3–4 hours each week. By the time the chicks are over 30 days old, natural daylight is sufficient. After hatching, chicks should be given a 0.01% potassium permanganate solution to drink before being allowed to eat. Pheasants are known for their frequent feeding habits, so multiple small meals throughout the day are recommended. Their diet should include a variety of ingredients such as corn, soybean meal, fish meal, bran, cooked meat, bone meal, green feed, and various trace minerals. The feed must contain at least 18% crude protein to support healthy growth. Adult pheasants can be raised in cages or enclosures. The cage design should be similar to that used for chickens, with proper facilities such as shelters, waterers, feeders, and nesting boxes. A well-balanced feed formula includes 41% corn, 10% bran, 19% soybean meal, 15% fish meal, 10% green feed, 3% bone meal, and 3% salt and mineral additives. Pheasants grow most rapidly between 61 and 120 days of age. For commercial purposes, they are typically ready for sale around 120 days, as this is when they reach optimal weight and market value.
