Three keys to feeding pheasants
The hatching of pheasant eggs, commonly referred to as pheasants, requires careful management and proper conditions. While chicken eggs can also be used for hatching, it's best to use only high-quality pheasant eggs for optimal results. The incubation period for pheasants typically lasts 24 days. During the first 20 days, the temperature should be maintained at 37.5°C with a relative humidity of 65 to 70%. In the final four days, the temperature should be slightly reduced to 37°C to help the chicks hatch more easily.
After hatching, brooding is essential to ensure the survival and growth of the chicks. The temperature should be gradually decreased over time. For the first 1 to 3 days, the ideal temperature is between 34°C and 35°C. From day 4 to 5, it should be lowered to 33°C to 34°C, then to 32°C to 33°C from day 6 to 8. Between days 9 and 20, the temperature should be kept around 31°C to 32°C, and for chicks aged 21 to 60 days, the temperature should be maintained at 26°C to 28°C.
Lighting is also important during the early stages. Chicks under 10 days old should be exposed to 24 hours of continuous light to help them find food and water. After that, the lighting duration should be gradually reduced by 3 to 4 hours each week. Once they are over 30 days old, natural daylight can be used.
Upon hatching, chicks should be given a 0.01% potassium permanganate solution to drink before being allowed to eat. Pheasants are known to be opportunistic feeders and prefer multiple small meals throughout the day. Their diet should include a variety of ingredients such as corn, soybean meal, fishmeal, bran, cooked meat, bone meal, green feed, and various mineral and vitamin supplements. The feed must contain at least 18% crude protein to support their growth and development.
Adult pheasants can be raised in cages or pens. The cage design should be similar to that used for chickens, with proper shelter, feeding areas, waterers, and nesting boxes provided. A well-balanced feed formula includes 41% corn, 10% bran, 19% soybean meal, 15% fishmeal, 10% green feed, 3% bone meal, and 3% salt and trace minerals. Pheasants grow most rapidly between 61 and 120 days of age. For commercial purposes, they are typically sold at around 120 days when they reach an optimal weight and market value.
