In recent years, the high profitability of abalone farming led to a surge in aquaculture activities along coastal intertidal zones. However, as the economic returns declined and operational challenges increased, many abalone farms became underutilized or abandoned, resulting in significant waste of resources and infrastructure. To address this issue, integrating sea cucumber cultivation into these areas using baochi rock piles has emerged as a promising solution, helping to revitalize existing facilities while supporting sustainable aquaculture practices.
First, site selection for the ginseng pool should focus on locations with gentle tidal flows, minimal wave action, and stable salinity levels. It is also important to avoid areas with excessive wild seaweed or contaminated marine vegetation. Special attention must be given to preventing large amounts of freshwater from entering during the rainy season, which can disrupt the delicate balance of the aquatic environment.
Second, when constructing the stone barriers, the blocks should be arranged in line with the natural flow of the current to enhance structural stability and prevent damage from storms. The ideal size of each stone block is between 10 to 20 kilograms. The barriers should be placed 0.8 to 1 meter away from the dam, with each row of stones spaced 0.5 to 0.6 meters apart. Each row should be 1 meter wide and 1.2 to 1.3 meters tall, while the concrete dam should stand at a height of 2 meters to ensure proper water control.
Third, seedlings should be introduced early to shorten the growth cycle. Sea cucumber seedlings used for planting should be one-year-old individuals weighing around 50 grams. They must be healthy, free from injuries, and show strong vitality. During the first week of June, approximately 8,000 to 10,000 seedlings are planted per acre. By the end of June in the following year, each individual should weigh over 150 grams, with a survival rate exceeding 80%.
Fourth, maintaining the correct water level is crucial. The pond’s water level should be kept at 1.5 to 1.6 meters, increasing to at least 1.8 meters during the summer rainy season to stabilize salinity and support sea cucumber growth. In hot weather, the water level should be as high as possible to reduce temperature fluctuations. During colder months, water exchange should be minimized to maintain warmth. These conditions promote rapid growth and weight gain in sea cucumbers.
Fifth, feeding practices should focus on naturally occurring benthic diatoms, organic detritus, and seaweed-based nutrients. Additional feed such as kelp, scallopweed, and seaweed scraps mixed with mud can be provided. Fish, shrimp, crab, and snail remnants can also be combined with sweet potato powder, corn flour, and sea mud. The daily feeding amount should be about 10% of the sea cucumber's body weight, split into two portions: 80% in the evening and 20% in the morning. Feeding frequency may be reduced in summer and winter to avoid overfeeding.
Lastly, daily management involves monitoring weather forecasts to prevent freshwater intrusion, ensuring round-the-clock security to deter theft, and adjusting water levels to prevent escape. Regular observation of sea cucumber growth, water quality checks, and prompt problem-solving are essential. Additionally, measures must be taken to prevent oil spills, chemical pollution, and physical erosion that could damage the ginseng pools. With proper care and attention, this integrated approach can restore productivity and sustainability to previously underused aquaculture sites.
