Winter farm machinery needs seven defenses

Winter farm machinery needs seven defenses

Wood rot can occur if wooden parts of machines are not properly maintained. To prevent this, wood components should be cleaned thoroughly, dried completely, and then coated with tung oil to protect them. Afterward, store them in a well-ventilated and dry area to avoid moisture buildup.

For metal parts prone to rust, especially those made of iron, it's important to remove them during winter. Clean them carefully, dry them completely, and apply a thin layer of waste oil to prevent oxidation. This will help maintain their integrity over time.

To prevent battery degradation in large and medium-sized tractors that are parked for long periods, the batteries should be removed. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the terminals and connecting rods. Then, store the batteries in a warm, dry place and make sure to charge them at least once every other month to keep them in good condition.

When motors are not used for an extended period, they should be stored in a dry, clean, and well-ventilated space. Avoid keeping them near chemicals like pesticides or fertilizers, as these can cause damage or corrosion over time.

Rubber parts, such as belts on agricultural machinery, are prone to aging if left in one place for too long. To prevent this, remove the belts and hang them on a wall or store them in a dry, ventilated area. This will help preserve their flexibility and lifespan.

To prevent spring deformation, especially in hand-held tractors, it's advisable to disengage the clutch when parking for storage. Leaving the clutch engaged for a long time can cause the springs to lose their elasticity due to constant pressure. Additionally, make sure to turn off the engine’s intake and exhaust valves to reduce unnecessary stress on the system.

Lastly, to prevent cracking in the water tank of a tractor that is not in use for a long time, drain all the cooling water completely. This is crucial in extreme cold weather to avoid freezing, which can lead to cracks and costly repairs.

Maintaining agricultural equipment properly during storage ensures its longevity and performance when needed again. Taking these simple steps can save time, money, and hassle in the long run.
