Summer high temperature stuffy shed to prevent vegetable nematodes>
During the summer, when greenhouses are not in active use, a high-temperature soil treatment method is commonly applied to improve soil health and control pests. This technique involves using hot water combined with chemical treatments under anaerobic conditions, which effectively eliminates nematodes, bacteria, and their eggs, while also reducing the concentration of salts in the soil. By improving the soil structure, this approach serves as a multi-functional agricultural practice. It is typically carried out after mid-June, following the harvest of greenhouse vegetables, and has shown an effectiveness rate of over 90% in controlling root-knot nematodes.
The process includes several key steps:
1. **Soil Disinfection**: After harvesting, the plastic cover should not be removed immediately. Any damaged plants must be removed and destroyed to prevent re-infestation. For soil disinfection, 2125 soil sterilizer is recommended. In loamy or clay soils, about 1 kg per greenhouse is used, while in areas with more severe nematode infestations, 2 kg of nematicide is applied. In sandy loam soils, where salinization is more common, 500–1000 kg of 2–3 cm crop straw per acre is spread evenly on the surface. The straw, along with pesticides and bactericides, is then deeply tilled into the soil to a depth of 30–40 cm, forming raised beds that are 80 cm wide, 30 cm high, and 40 cm long.
2. **High-Temperature Fumigation**: A large amount of water is poured into the soil, and the area is covered with plastic film to create a sealed environment. The greenhouse vents are closed, allowing the temperature to rise. The soil temperature at 20 cm depth should remain above 50°C for 15–20 days, creating a high-temperature anaerobic condition that kills most pests and pathogens.
3. **Nutrient Replenishment**: After the fumigation, most pests and harmful microorganisms are eliminated, but some beneficial microbes may also be affected. To restore soil vitality, 4 bottles of high-energy biological fertilizer are applied per acre before planting, helping to reintroduce essential microorganisms.
This method not only controls pests but also improves soil quality, making it more suitable for future crops. It is a scientifically supported and widely practiced technique in regions like Langfang Yongqing County.
