Vietnam and other countries will study potential resistance to avian influenza virus

Hanoi, July 26 — According to Xinhua News Agency, officials from Vietnam's Central Institute of Epidemiology and Health Research have announced that Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia will start testing the potential drug resistance of the H5N1 bird flu virus in early August. The study aims to explore more effective treatment methods for patients infected with avian influenza. The trial, reported by Vietnamese media on the 25th, will take place at the Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Disease Hospital and the Hanoi Tropical Diseases Clinical College. Researchers plan to increase the dosage of the antiviral drug "Tamiflu" given to bird flu patients, from the current 75 mg to 150 mg. This approach is intended to determine whether the H5N1 virus could develop resistance to higher doses of the medication. The study is expected to last several years, as scientists work to find improved treatments for this deadly strain. Vietnam’s Ministry of Health recently stated that since the first outbreak of bird flu in late 2003, the country has recorded 93 confirmed cases, with 42 deaths. No new human cases were reported after mid-November 2005. However, in late 2005, it was discovered that four deceased patients had been infected with a strain of the bird flu virus that showed resistance to Tamiflu. According to recent data from the World Health Organization, since 2003, a total of 231 people have been infected with bird flu globally, resulting in 133 fatalities. Of these, 42 were in Vietnam and Indonesia, while 14 were reported in Thailand. As the global health community continues to monitor the spread and evolution of the H5N1 virus, such studies play a crucial role in preparing for future outbreaks and ensuring better medical responses.
