Serrata Crab Harvesting Clever Way

Serrata Crab Harvesting Clever Way

The green crabs in the intertidal zone should be collected promptly to ensure effective control and maximize economic returns. Both large and small crabs should be captured, whether fat or thin, to maintain a balanced population and avoid overpopulation. September is the mating season for blue crabs, making it crucial to collect male crabs in time. Male crabs often lose weight after multiple matings, which reduces their market value and can lead to high mortality rates. Similarly, female crabs that have mated will also experience changes in body condition. After 30–40 days of feeding, they will develop into mature crabs. However, if left too long, they may become over-ripe, leading to reduced quality and difficulty in holding them, which further lowers their value. In addition, as sea temperatures drop, it becomes increasingly difficult to raise green crabs during winter. Therefore, timely collection is essential. Typically, blue crabs in ponds should be harvested before the end of October to avoid losses due to cold weather and poor growth conditions. There are several methods for catching green crabs: (a) **Light trapping**: Blue crabs are known to climb the edges of pools or tidal areas at night. Using lights can help attract them, making it easier to capture them with nets. (b) **Dry pool trapping**: This method involves draining the pond slightly and using traps or manual collection to catch crabs. It’s an effective way to gather crabs without water interference. Another traditional technique is **hand fishing**, which has been used for generations. This method causes minimal damage to the crabs but requires skill and experience. Alternatively, using a crab net is a common practice. While it saves time, it can sometimes result in injuries to the crabs, so care must be taken during handling. Once caught, blue crabs should be securely bundled to prevent them from biting each other. During hot summer months, they should be stored in cool, humid environments. In colder weather, covering them with water and grass helps maintain their freshness and quality. Proper handling and storage are key to ensuring the crabs remain in good condition for sale or consumption.
