Vietnam and other countries will study potential resistance to avian influenza virus
Hanoi, July 26 — According to Xinhua News Agency, Vietnam's Central Institute of Epidemiology and Health Research has announced plans to start testing the potential drug resistance of the H5N1 bird flu virus in early August. The study aims to explore more effective treatment options for patients infected with the virus. The initiative will involve hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, focusing on how higher doses of the antiviral medication Tamiflu might impact the virus.
The Vietnamese media reported that researchers will increase the dosage of Tamiflu from the current 75 mg to 150 mg for bird flu patients. This trial is expected to last several years, allowing scientists to monitor whether the H5N1 virus develops resistance to higher concentrations of the drug. Such findings could lead to improved treatment protocols and better management of future outbreaks.
Since the first outbreak of bird flu in Vietnam in late 2003, a total of 93 human cases have been recorded, with 42 resulting in fatalities. Although no new human cases were reported after mid-November 2005, it was later discovered that four deceased patients had previously developed resistance to Tamiflu. This highlights the growing concern over the virus's ability to evolve and evade existing treatments.
According to the World Health Organization, since 2003, bird flu has infected 231 people globally, with 133 deaths. Among these, 42 were in Vietnam and Indonesia, while 14 occurred in Thailand. As the global health community continues to monitor the situation, efforts like Vietnam's new study are crucial in staying ahead of this dangerous virus.
