August Flower Handbook>
August is a transitional month in terms of weather, marking the end of the "volt period" on August 15 and the summer heat on August 23. This means that the intense heat begins to subside, and temperatures across most parts of China gradually decrease. While August is cooler than July, it still remains significantly warmer than June’s average temperature, making it the second-hottest month of the year. On a national scale, rainfall in August is less than during the rainy season, leading to hot, dry conditions that can be particularly challenging for foliage plants that thrive in cool and humid environments. As a result, careful attention must be given to watering, fertilization, and shading practices to ensure the health of flowering plants.
August flower management involves several key activities, including propagation through sowing, cutting, grafting, layering, and division. Here's an overview of the main tasks:
**1. Sowing**
In August, you can sow a wide variety of flowers such as rush, lupin, petunia, snapdragon, echinacea, shamrock, bellflower, foxglove, columbaria, jasminoides, nasturtium, pyrethrum, delphinium, and cut charlotte. Greenhouse plants like Pueraria, Dendrobium, Cyclamen, Cineraria, Moth, Four Seasons, Spring, and Potamogeton can also be sown. Woody flowers such as peony, eucalyptus, and safflower oil tea can be propagated by seeding or transplanting after germination. Pomegranate seeds should be harvested, washed, and sown after the fleshy outer layer is removed.
**2. Cuttings**
Semi-fine sand and stalked ash are ideal substrates for woody flower cuttings. Species like Pyracantha, Mahonia, Bougainvillea, Erythrina, and others can be propagated this way. Common sand loam is suitable for propagating cyclovirobuxine, purple magnolia, pomegranate, hibiscus, and many others. Using all-optical spraying methods, large numbers of Metasequoia, Taxodium, and similar species can be rooted easily. Sandy loam seedbeds are also effective for marigold, chrysanthemum, and amaranth, which can be transplanted into pots by October and displayed in public spaces by November.
**3. Grafting**
August is a good time for grafting. Purple or white magnolia seedlings can be used as rootstocks for producing high-quality white magnolia and two-qiao magnolia through bud grafting. Similarly, one-year-old peach seedlings can be used for grafting peaches, red-leaf peaches, and other varieties. Cherry seedlings are ideal for grafting Japanese cherry blossoms, while nectarines and mountain apricots can be used for heavy-leafed Yu plum propagation. Wild rosewood and Shan Jingzi seedlings are suitable for grafting Xifu Begonia and other varieties.
**4. Layering**
Plants such as honeysuckle, gardenia, hydrangea, oleander, viburnum, and others can be propagated through layering in August. This method is especially effective for ornamental plants that grow quickly and establish roots easily.
**5. Division**
Ornamental plants like Jixiangcao, Aster, Amaranth, Delphinium, Campanulaceae, Acorus, and various ferns can be divided in August. Additionally, Lycoris, Calla Lily, Freesia, and Begonia can be separated into small clumps for propagation.
**Second, Seed Harvesting and Planting**
In August, you can collect seeds from Chrysanthemum, dill, Mirabilis japonica, Phlox, and other grasses. Flower and peony seeds mature between August and September, and once ripe, they should be collected promptly. For trees like peony, pomegranate, eucalyptus, and safflower oil tea, harvesting and sowing should be done carefully.
**Transplanting**
While large tree transplantation is generally avoided in August, smaller shrubs such as leaf privet, Phnom Penh amaranthus, cypress, and boxwood can be transplanted with large soil balls. After transplanting, these plants require regular watering, misting, and shading to help them recover. To prepare for National Day displays, marigolds, amaranth, and other flowering plants can be transplanted into flower beds or street green areas, ensuring they bloom on time with proper care.
