The feeding and management of ewes during the first month of pregnancy is a critical phase that directly affects the health and development of the fetus. Although grazing on forage and providing supplements can help them feel full, it may still not meet their full nutritional needs. Therefore, farmers should carefully evaluate the ewe’s condition and provide appropriate concentrate feed to ensure proper nourishment.
As pregnancy progresses into the second month, the fetus begins to grow more rapidly. The amount of concentrate feed should be gradually increased. A recommended mix includes 40% soybeans, 30% corn, 20% barley, and 10% wheat. Soak this mixture in warm water for 6–8 hours, grind it into a soft pulp, and then add 10–15% soybean meal, 5–8% bran, and 1% salt based on the total weight of the soybeans. This mixture should be fed 2–3 times daily, with each ewe receiving 50–100 grams of the blend. Younger ewes, which have higher energy requirements, should receive slightly more concentrate.
By the third month of pregnancy, the ewe’s forage intake should be carefully managed to avoid overfeeding. While forages remain an important part of the diet, the frequency of feeding concentrates should be reduced to prevent excessive weight gain, which could negatively impact fetal development.
During the fourth month, the fetus has already reached 60–70% of its birth weight, and the ewe needs to store enough nutrients to support milk production after birth. At this stage, the concentrate feed should be doubled compared to pre-pregnancy levels. It’s essential to provide fresh, varied, and easily digestible feeds. Green, juicy options like carrots, leafy vegetables, and tender pastures can be included to enhance nutrient intake and maintain the ewe’s overall health.
