Fruit trees should pay attention to calcium

Calcium is essential for maintaining the physiological balance in fruit trees during their growth and development. In orchards suffering from waterlogging, low organic matter content, and high soil acidity, calcium levels are often insufficient. This deficiency can significantly hinder the growth, development, and fruiting of fruit trees. The main symptoms of calcium deficiency in fruit trees include curling of the leaf tips into a hook-like shape when the plant reaches about 20 cm in height. Within a few days, these curled areas turn brown and gradually spread downward along the leaf. The leaves become smaller than normal, and root growth is stunted. New roots become short, thick, and curved, with the tips often turning brown and dying. Calcium deficiency in fruits can lead to a loss of cell wall integrity in the pulp, resulting in widespread fruit drop before harvest. Other issues include sunburn, cracking, severe rotting, and poor resistance to storage and transportation. To address calcium deficiency, common calcium fertilizers used in fruit tree cultivation include calcium chloride and calcium nitrate. Foliar spraying is the most effective method, typically at a concentration of 0.3% to 0.5%. Fruit trees absorb calcium in two peak periods annually: the first shortly after flowering, and the second about one month before harvest. Spraying during these times yields the best results. In addition, applying organic fertilizers, improving soil fertility, or adding lime to reduce soil acidity can enhance the plant's ability to absorb and utilize calcium effectively. By ensuring adequate calcium supply, growers can improve tree health, increase fruit quality, and reduce losses due to disease and environmental stress. It's important to monitor soil conditions regularly and adjust fertilization practices accordingly for optimal results.
