Analysis of the Benefits of Integrating Fish (Xiangyunjing) and Ducks (Lazy Hybrid Ducks) in Ponds by Zhang Bing and Xia Qinhui

Since 2001, I have been experimenting with raising 2,000 varieties of Xiangyunxiao summer fish in a 2-mu pond for three months. After draining the pond, we harvested a total of 1,850 fish, weighing 592 jins, with an average weight of 160 grams per fish. This demonstrated a clear growth advantage over previous species like Pengzeyu and Ziyu silver pupa. However, I initially struggled to find reliable sources for Xiangyun fish fry until 2004 when I discovered a new squid breeding technology. The only available supplier was Hunan Xiangyun Biotech Co., Ltd. That year, I imported 100,000 water droplets from Xiangyun squid through a local distributor in Chongqing. These were placed in a 1.5-mu pond, and after 40 days, we had 60,000 summer fish (each about 1.5 inches in size). We kept 5,000 of them and sold the rest at 0.5 yuan each, earning 8,250 yuan. After deducting costs for fry, feed, and pond disinfectant (3,150 yuan), the net income was 5,100 yuan, averaging 3,400 yuan per month. The remaining 5,000 fish were transferred to a 4.2-mu pond in early July. The pond was 1.5 meters deep, and more than 500 fish were stocked in each section. Two duck sheds were built in the southeast corners of the pond, with nets installed so ducks could swim freely. We raised 160 lazy hybrid ducks, feeding them once every 40 days, with a total of 1,800 ducks across three batches. Using duck manure as fertilizer for fish farming, we initially fed the fish 10 kg daily in two portions, later reducing it to one portion of 15 kg. A total of 1,650 kg of feed (with 32% protein content) was used, mostly derived from duck manure. At the end of the year, after draining the pond, we harvested 1,525 kg of Xiangyunjing (4,536 fish), with an average weight of 335 grams each. Selling at 9 yuan per kg, this generated 13,725 yuan. Additionally, 967 squid were caught, totaling 1,218 kg, sold at 5.5 yuan per kg, bringing in 6,699 yuan. Total fish income reached 20,424 yuan, with an average output value of 4,862 yuan per mu. After subtracting feed (4,650 yuan), pond disinfectant (500 yuan), utilities (100 yuan), and rent (1,100 yuan), the net fish income was 14,072 yuan. Meanwhile, the duck farming added another 10,710 yuan, with a net profit of 2,610 yuan after deducting duckling costs (3,600 yuan), feed (1,000 yuan), and other expenses (500 yuan). Although the profitability of ducks was low, the cost of fish farming was significantly reduced due to the use of duck manure, making the entire system economically viable. This model has been considered a promising approach for promotion. In 2005, I directly imported 2 million Xiangyun fish and 600,000 waterfowl from Hunan Xiangyun Biotech Co., Ltd. Of these, 300,000 were used in our ponds, while the rest were sold to 76 neighboring farms. We continued with the fish-duck polyculture model, expanding to 16.7 acres of three fish ponds. By early October, the fish showed excellent growth, and many farmers from surrounding areas, including Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan, began ordering fish seedlings. After nearly three years of aquaculture development, I am convinced that Xiangyunjing grows quickly, reaches a large size, tastes delicious, and commands a good market price. It is especially popular among fishermen. In 2006, I signed a distribution agreement with Hunan Xiangyun Biotech Co., Ltd. in Xiangyun City, Sichuan Province, aiming to sell over 10 million Xiangyun fish in Ganzhou City.
