Laying chickens are more harmful to vitamins

In order to boost egg production, some poultry farmers mistakenly increase vitamin supplementation without proper guidance. This practice can lead to vitamin toxicity in hens, negatively affecting their health, growth, and overall productivity. It is crucial to follow recommended vitamin levels when formulating layer chicken feed. Over-supplementation can be harmful and even life-threatening. For instance, vitamin A should be provided at 4,000 international units per kilogram of feed. Exceeding this amount may result in vitamin A toxicity, causing symptoms such as depression, convulsions, reduced feed intake, feather loss, and in severe cases, death. Similarly, vitamin D levels should not exceed 500 international units per kg of feed. Too much vitamin D can cause excessive calcium mobilization from bones and increased intestinal absorption, leading to elevated blood calcium levels. This can result in calcium deposits in soft tissues like the arteries, joints, kidneys, and heart, causing symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, kidney stones, and potentially fatal uremia. Vitamin E should be included at 5 international units per kg of feed. Overfeeding can disrupt fat metabolism, leading to severe health issues, including poisoning or death in laying hens. Vitamin K is typically added at 0.5 mg per kg of feed. Excessive amounts can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to reduced appetite, diarrhea, and a decline in egg production. In extreme cases, egg-laying may stop altogether. The best approach to prevent vitamin toxicity is to formulate rations according to established feeding standards. If hens show signs of vitamin overdose, it's essential to immediately stop vitamin supplementation and ensure access to clean, fresh water. Most affected hens will gradually recover within two weeks if properly cared for. Always consult with a veterinarian before making changes to feed formulations.
