Analysis on the Polyculture Benefit of Fish (Xiangyun鲫) and Duck (Lacing Hybrid Duck) Ponds

Analysis of the Mixed-Use Benefits of Xiangyunjing (Fish) and Lazy Hybrid Ducks in Ponds by Zhang Bing and Xia Qinhui

Since 2001, I have been experimenting with raising 2,000 seedlings of Xiangyunxiao summer fish in a 2-mu pond for three months. After draining the pond, we harvested a total of 1,850 fish, weighing 592 jin (approximately 296 kg), with an average weight of 160 grams per fish. It was observed that Xiangyunjing had a clear growth advantage over other species like Pengzeyu and Ziyu silver carp that were previously raised. However, I struggled to find reliable sources for the fry until 2004, when I learned about a new squid breeding technology. Eventually, I discovered that the only source of Xiangyunjing fry was Hunan Xiangyun Biotech Co., Ltd. In that year, I imported 100,000 fry from the company through a local dealer in Chongqing. These were placed in a 1.5-mu pond. After 40 days, we had 60,000 fish, each about 1.5 inches long. We kept 5,000 of them and sold the rest at 0.5 yuan each, earning 8,250 yuan. After deducting costs for fry, feed, and pond disinfectant (totaling 3,150 yuan), the net profit was 5,100 yuan, or about 3,400 yuan on average. The remaining 5,000 fish were moved to a 4.2-mu pond in early July. The pond was 1.5 meters deep, and more than 500 fish were stocked in each section. Two duck sheds were built in the southeast corners of the pond, with nets installed underneath so the ducks could swim. I raised 160 lazy hybrid ducks, feeding them once every 40 days in three batches, totaling 1,800 ducks. Using duck manure as fertilizer for the fish, during the first month of stocking, the Japanese government's feeding standard was set at 10 kg per day, later reduced to 15 kg daily. A total of 1,650 kg of feed (with 32% protein content) was used, mostly relying on duck manure. At the end of the year, after draining the pond, we harvested 1,525 kg (4,536 fish) of Xiangyunjing, averaging 335 grams per fish, selling at 9 yuan per kg, which brought in 13,725 yuan. Additionally, 967 fish were taken out, weighing 1,218 kg, with an average of 1.26 kg per fish, sold at 5.5 yuan per kg, totaling 6,699 yuan. Total fish income reached 20,424 yuan, averaging 4,862 yuan per mu. After deducting feed costs (4,650 yuan), pond disinfectant (500 yuan), utilities (100 yuan), and rent (1,100 yuan), the net fish income was 14,072 yuan. In addition, 3 ducks were raised, with 600 per batch and 1,800 in total. Each duck weighed 1.7 kg on average, sold at 3.5 yuan per kg, bringing in 10,710 yuan. After subtracting duckling costs (3,600 yuan), feed (1,000 yuan), and other expenses (500 yuan), the net profit was 2,610 yuan. While the profitability of duck farming was low, the cost of fish farming was significantly reduced due to the use of duck manure. This integrated model is considered highly promising and worth promoting. In 2005, I directly imported 2 million Xiangyunjing fry and 600,000 waterfowl fry from Hunan Xiangyun Biotech Co., Ltd. Out of these, 300,000 were used in our own ponds, while the rest were sold to 76 neighboring farms. We continued this polyculture method, expanding to 16.7 acres across 3 fish ponds. By early October, the fish were growing well, and many farmers from surrounding areas, including those from Yunnan Zhaotong, Zhenxiong, Guizhou Chishui, and Xishui, began ordering seedlings. After nearly three years of aquaculture promotion, I believe that Xiangyunjing grows quickly, reaches large sizes, has excellent taste, and commands a good market price, making it very popular among fish enthusiasts. In 2006, I signed a distribution agreement with Hunan Xiangyun Biotech Co., Ltd. in Xiangyun City, Sichuan Province, planning to sell over 10 million Xiangyunjing fry in Ganzhou City’s Xiangyun Lake.
