The big bunting fish breeding pond construction technology>
The rearing pond should be between 1.5 to 15 mu in size, with soft clay at the bottom being ideal for stability and ease of maintenance. Chiko (a type of fish) is not easy to manage, and it's challenging to introduce seedlings all at once. Therefore, the pond bottom needs to be flat to ensure proper drainage and to support the growth of benthic diatoms, which are essential for the fish's nutrition. The pond floor should have a slight slope towards the floodgate to facilitate water drainage.
A central drainage ditch, 2 meters wide and 50 centimeters deep, should be dug along the center and on both sides of the pond. These ditches must connect to the main drainage gate. In addition, the ditches can serve as shelter areas for large skipjack fish when using tarpaulin covers. The water depth in the pond is generally maintained between 5 to 20 cm; if the depth exceeds 30 cm, it may negatively affect the growth of the fish.
The salinity of the water should be kept between 14 and 27 parts per thousand, while the water temperature should remain within 24 to 30°C. If the temperature rises above 32°C, shading structures should be installed in the pond to provide relief. During winter, when the water temperature drops below 14°C, the fish can burrow into the mud to survive the cold season.
To prevent escape and protect the fish from predators, the embankments around the pond should be enclosed with bamboo curtains or plastic panels. This setup not only helps in controlling the fish population but also minimizes disturbances from other animals. Regular monitoring of water quality, temperature, and salinity is essential to maintain an optimal environment for the fish’s health and development.
