Feeding should be balanced and nutritious. Include vegetables or multivitamins in their diet to boost immunity and support healthy development. Also, provide appropriate shelter with shade to avoid direct sunlight, which can slow growth and cause stress.
Vaccination is another critical aspect. Summer is a high-risk season for young animals, especially due to diseases like parvovirus, infectious enteritis, and others. These illnesses often have no specific treatments, so early prevention is key. As maternal antibodies decrease, cubs become more vulnerable. If symptoms appear late, treatment may be too late.
Common clinical signs include loss of appetite, excess feed in the trough, elevated body temperature (over 41°C), labored breathing, pale skin, dry nose, red eyes, and purulent discharge. In severe cases, the animal may stop eating, close its eyes, tremble, become paralyzed, and die within 2–3 days if acute, or 6–9 days if chronic.
Pathological changes often show tracheal congestion, enlarged lymph nodes, empty gastrointestinal tracts, internal bleeding, and lesions in the intestines. The liver may be enlarged with fatty degeneration, the spleen atrophied, and the kidneys swollen.
To prevent disease spread: isolate sick animals immediately and disinfect with iodine solutions or sprays. Administer vaccines for parvovirus and infectious enteritis as scheduled—1–2 ml per animal. Avoid overcrowding and maintain good hygiene. Additionally, supplement with oxytetracycline to prevent infections.
In short, as colonies expand and virus outbreaks increase, preventive vaccination remains the top priority. Diarrhea is a protective response, initially a detoxification process, but later requires fluid replacement and supportive care.
