Calcium is essential for maintaining the physiological balance in fruit trees during their growth and development. In orchards that suffer from waterlogging, have low organic matter content, or are highly acidic, calcium levels are often insufficient, which can significantly hinder the tree's growth, fruiting, and overall health. The symptoms of calcium deficiency in fruit trees are quite distinct. When the plant reaches about 20 cm in height, the tips of young leaves begin to curl into a hook-like shape. Within a few days, these areas turn brown and gradually spread downward along the leaf. The affected leaves are usually smaller than normal, and root growth is stunted, with new roots becoming short, thick, and curled. The tips of these roots often die off due to browning. Calcium deficiency in fruits can lead to the loss of cell wall integrity in the pulp, resulting in widespread fruit drop before harvest. Additionally, issues like sunscald, fruit cracking, and severe rotting become more common, making the fruits less resistant to storage and transportation. To address calcium deficiency, calcium chloride and calcium nitrate are commonly used as fertilizers. Foliar spraying is the most effective method, typically applied at a concentration of 0.3% to 0.5%. Fruit trees absorb calcium in two main periods during the year: the first peak occurs shortly after flowering, and the second peak takes place about a month before harvest. Spraying during these times ensures optimal absorption. In addition to foliar applications, incorporating organic matter into the soil, using balanced fertilization, and applying lime to reduce soil acidity can all enhance the tree’s ability to take up and utilize calcium effectively. These combined strategies help maintain healthy growth and improve fruit quality.
