Calcium is essential for maintaining the physiological balance in fruit trees during their growth and development. In orchards with poor drainage, low organic matter, and highly acidic soil, calcium levels are often insufficient, which can negatively impact tree growth, fruit production, and overall health.
The most common signs of calcium deficiency in fruit trees include curling of young leaves into a hook-like shape when the plant reaches about 20 cm in height. These curled leaves soon turn brown and die, spreading downward across the leaf surface. The leaves are typically smaller than normal, and root development is stunted—new roots become short, thick, and curved, often dying at the tips. Calcium-deficient fruits may suffer from cell membrane damage, leading to premature fruit drop, sunburn, cracking, and increased susceptibility to diseases. Such fruits also tend to be less durable during storage and transport.
To address calcium deficiency, common calcium fertilizers used in orchards include calcium chloride and calcium nitrate. Foliar spraying is the most effective method, with a recommended concentration of 0.3% to 0.5%. Fruit trees absorb calcium in two peak periods: once shortly after flowering and again about a month before harvest. Spraying during these times ensures maximum nutrient uptake. Additionally, incorporating organic manure into the soil, applying lime to reduce acidity, or adjusting soil conditions can improve the tree’s ability to absorb and utilize calcium efficiently. Regular monitoring of soil pH and calcium levels is also crucial for long-term orchard health.
