In recent years, the importance of environmental disinfection in mushroom sheds has become increasingly evident. Strengthening the "environment" concept and implementing strict disinfection and sterilization measures are crucial for maintaining healthy mushroom cultivation. However, the mushroom production environment is gradually deteriorating due to factors like contaminated bags, diseased mushrooms, and leftover cultivation waste, which create new disease reservoirs. This leads to frequent disease outbreaks and cross-infection, making continuous production more challenging. This issue has been observed since the 1990s and remains difficult to manage effectively.
For base-type mushroom farming, improving the overall environment is a top priority. Even when large-scale remediation is not feasible, we can enhance hygiene by thoroughly cleaning the area around the shed, including workspaces, toilets, and garbage disposal zones. Special attention must be given to eliminating bacterial contamination from used bags and waste materials. Spraying high-concentration mixtures of carbendazim and phoxim can help control pests, and if the environment is particularly poor, two rounds of treatment are recommended.
When it comes to new mushroom sheds, effective disinfection can be achieved using products like "All Diseases Gone" or phoxim. A typical dosage is 50 grams of phoxim per bag, covering approximately 30 square meters. The solution should be sprayed on the floor, walls, and pillars, ensuring full coverage. Afterward, the shed should be sealed, and the sunshade tent rolled up to trap the fumigant inside for two days. During the germination and fruiting stages, it's advisable to spray the shed every five days with a disease-prevention solution, but avoid direct contact with the mushroom caps.
For older mushroom sheds that have been used for many years, thorough disinfection is essential. These areas often harbor a significant number of pathogens, spores, and pests. A standard approach involves using 40 grams of phoxim per bag, spraying over 20 square meters, and sealing the shed for two days. If necessary, repeat the process after 2-7 days to ensure all contaminants are eliminated before reusing the space.
This year’s climate has been unusually humid and rainy, especially during early autumn when temperatures are higher—conditions that favor the spread of diseases. According to my tests conducted between late June and early July this year, the microbial count was 13.6% and 22% higher than the same period last year, with an average increase of 18%. This data highlights the growing risk and serves as an important warning for mushroom farmers.
Therefore, I recommend that farmers cultivating mushrooms from August to October take extra precautions. Before processing the shed, it’s advisable to water the area thoroughly. Then, sprinkle fresh lime powder at a rate of 0.25 kg per square meter before placing the mushroom bags inside. This helps lower the temperature and reduces the activity of certain harmful bacteria, thereby decreasing the likelihood of disease occurrence.
