Studies say that taking cardiovascular drugs in the elderly may induce falls

Release date: 2007-10-25

A recent study highlighted that certain medications, particularly those used to treat cardiovascular conditions, can increase the risk of falls among the elderly. The Ministry of Health released the "China Injury Prevention Report," which identified children, adolescents, and the elderly as high-risk groups for injuries, with falling being the primary cause. According to the report, between 21% and 23% of men and 43% to 44% of women aged 65 and older in China have experienced a fall. The likelihood of falling increases significantly with age. It is estimated that around 25 million people aged 60 or older in China suffer from fall-related injuries each year.

Falls are a major cause of injury among the elderly, often resulting in soft tissue damage, fractures, joint bleeding, dislocations, and sprains. In severe cases, these injuries can even lead to increased mortality rates. The report emphasized that the risk of death following a fall rises sharply with age. Several factors contribute to the occurrence of falls in older adults.

Internal risk factors include age-related physical decline, such as weakened muscles, balance issues, and reduced mobility. Underlying health conditions, along with their symptoms, also raise the likelihood of falling. Certain medications, including psychotropic drugs and some cardiovascular treatments, can further increase this risk. On the external side, environmental hazards like poorly lit indoor spaces, uneven sidewalks, cluttered walkways, and neglected outdoor steps play a significant role in causing falls. Additionally, socioeconomic factors such as low education levels, limited income, and reduced social interaction may also influence the frequency of falls among the elderly.

Prevention strategies should focus on improving living environments, promoting regular health check-ups, and carefully managing medication use. By addressing both internal and external risk factors, it's possible to reduce the number of fall-related injuries and improve the quality of life for older adults. ——Midi Medical Network
