What is the purpose of a skylight in a fermentation bed?
A properly functioning fermentation bed relies on several key factors: the type of microorganisms, the depth of the bedding material, the moisture level, the temperature, and the availability of nutrients from pig waste. The role of beneficial bacteria is crucial, as they are responsible for breaking down the manure. The diversity, activity level, and population of these microbes directly impact the efficiency of the fermentation process. Fermentation bed agents typically contain over a dozen beneficial microbial strains, with more than 3.5 billion live bacteria per gram. These microbes have been cultivated and activated to ensure optimal performance.
Moisture is another critical factor—ideally around 60%. Too much or too little moisture can hinder microbial activity and reduce the decomposition of waste. The depth of the bedding also plays a vital role; for our system, the recommended depth is 50 cm, which is less than what some other manufacturers suggest (typically 80–100 cm). This thickness ensures that the "core fermentation layer" remains active and capable of breaking down waste effectively. If the depth is too low, this core layer may become a protective or buffering layer, leading to reduced microbial activity and poor waste management.
Temperature is another important variable. While the fermentation process itself is relatively stable across a wide range of ambient temperatures (from below zero to up to 45°C), extreme temperatures can affect the pigs’ comfort and growth. Maintaining proper ventilation helps regulate the environment and supports both microbial activity and animal well-being.
Ventilation is essential for the smooth operation of the fermentation bed. Effective ventilation methods include natural options like windows and skylights, as well as mechanical solutions such as exhaust fans. For large-scale farms, a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation is ideal. Skylights help release ammonia and other volatile gases, while ground-level windows assist in removing heavier gases like carbon dioxide. Windows are especially effective at venting moisture vapor.
During hot weather, if airflow is restricted, or when indoor and outdoor temperatures differ by more than 10°C, it’s advisable to use fans to improve circulation. In winter, opening windows during midday (between 12–2 PM) allows fresh air in without exposing the pigs to cold drafts. Closing windows in the evening helps maintain warmth. A well-ventilated space not only enhances microbial activity but also contributes to healthier, more comfortable living conditions for the animals.
