Scientists find female menopause prediction methods

Recently, scientists have developed a new method to predict when a woman's menopause will begin. This groundbreaking test offers a "road map" for women as they approach their later years, helping those in their 40s who are experiencing a gradual decline in fertility. It allows women to better understand their chances of becoming pregnant after a certain age. The findings were recently published in the journal *Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism*. The research team studied over 6,000 women who were nearing menopause. They measured three key hormones in the blood—anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and inhibin B—to estimate the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. These hormones play a crucial role in regulating the menstrual cycle and egg production. The study found that levels of these hormones change significantly in the five years leading up to menopause. Specifically, AMH and inhibin B levels drop sharply, while FSH increases. This hormonal shift is linked to a decrease in the number of available eggs, making pregnancy less likely. Understanding these changes can help women make more informed decisions about family planning. Researchers believe this discovery is important because it fills a gap in current medical knowledge. Doctors previously lacked reliable data to accurately predict when a woman might enter menopause or how her fertility would decline. Professor Bill Laigir from the University of Sheffield commented, “Now we can say that if you have a certain level of follicle-stimulating hormone, it’s very likely you’re still in your childbearing years.” This new test could revolutionize how women and their doctors approach reproductive health, offering greater clarity and control during a critical life stage.
