Replanting the pig "slow" word first>
Pigs require careful feeding transitions at various stages of growth, such as when moving from nursing to weaning, weaning to growing, and growing to finishing. Additionally, changes in feed types—like switching from pellets to powders, or from wet to dry feed—can also necessitate a gradual adjustment. Other common scenarios include using feeds from different manufacturers, altering feeding schedules (e.g., reducing from 4-6 meals per day to 3-4), or changing the main raw materials used in self-mixed feeds. Many farmers rush this process, which can lead to digestive issues, stress, and poor performance in pigs. However, with a slow and steady approach during feed changes, these problems can be effectively avoided.
The best way to replace feed is through a step-by-step transition over four days. On day one, mix 25% new feed with 75% old feed. On day two, use 50% new and 50% old. Day three should be 75% new and 25% old. By day four, switch completely to the new feed. This gradual change allows the pigs’ digestive systems to adapt without shock.
As pigs grow, the composition of their feed should also evolve. Energy-dense ingredients like corn should increase gradually, while protein sources like soybean meal should decrease. For example, if you're increasing corn from 60% to 70%, do so by 1.5–2% per day over 4–5 days. At the same time, reduce soybean meal from 20% to 15%, decreasing by about 1% daily. Other ingredients like wheat bran or fishmeal can be used to fine-tune the diet. It's also important to maintain consistency in concentrate quality, ensuring that the new feed matches the nutritional value of the previous one. By following these steps, pig farmers can ensure smooth transitions and better overall health for their animals.
