Potholes (Figure)

Potamogeton moss, also known as Smithiiantha, is a unique plant belonging to the Gesneriaceae family. While it's sometimes referred to as velvet turfgrass due to its soft, velvety texture, it's quite different from typical grasses. One of its most intriguing features is its flower structure. Unlike other members of the Gemini family, the leaves and inflorescences of *C. sinica* are self-contained, with cylindrical flowers that hang from upright cones, giving it the common name "Temple Bells" because of their bell-like appearance. Native to Central America and Mexico, this perennial herb typically grows between 15 to 35 cm tall. Its heart-shaped leaves are densely covered in fine hairs, and their color can vary from light green to dark green or even red. The veins often display reddish-brown markings, enhancing the plant’s velvety look. Before entering dormancy, it develops underground bulbs, which allow it to regrow when conditions improve. The inflorescence emerges from the center of the plant or from leaf axils. The flowers are tubular in shape and come in a range of colors, including red, yellow, orange, white, and purple. Many have distinctive spots or yellow patches near the center, adding to their visual appeal. The flowering season usually occurs from autumn through winter, making it a beautiful addition to gardens during cooler months. This plant is not only visually striking but also resilient, adapting well to various growing conditions.
