Jilin Uses Rice Fields to Control Pests and Weeds in Paddy Fields

Rice field duck farming is an effective and eco-friendly technique that supports the development of green rice production. It helps control pests in paddy fields, enhances rice yield, improves rice quality, ensures food safety, increases the value of farmland, boosts farmers' income, and reduces environmental pollution. In 2005, the Jilin Plant Protection Station introduced this method to address issues like weeds, rice water weevils, and stem borers, while also improving the growth environment for rice and promoting energy-saving and emission-reduction practices. Currently, the project has been widely implemented in Fengman and Changyi districts of Jilin City, covering a total of 550 hectares. Of these, 340 hectares are in Fengman and 210 in Changyi. The average pest control effect has reached over 98%, with a yield increase of 8%. Over three years, more than 330,000 kilograms of rice were produced, and a net profit of 2.266 million yuan was achieved after deducting duck-rearing costs. The main technical measures include selecting hardy local duck breeds, preparing fences and simple duck houses, timing the stocking of ducks appropriately, feeding them properly, and managing the field effectively. Ducks are stocked about 10 days after transplanting, at a rate of 100 per hectare. They are fed twice daily, with adjustments based on their growth and weed/pest availability. Ducks are collected once the rice has matured, and the fields are managed with organic fertilizers and reduced chemical inputs. This system not only controls pests and weeds efficiently but also provides natural nutrients through duck manure, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. Economically, it brings significant benefits: each duck generates a profit of 5 yuan, and per hectare, the net income from both ducks and rice can reach up to 3,370 yuan. Over three years, this leads to a cumulative gain of 1.85 million yuan. Ecologically, the practice improves soil structure, enhances nutrient absorption, and reduces chemical usage, contributing to a healthier agricultural ecosystem. Socially, it promotes sustainable rice production, ensures safe food for consumers, and offers an easy-to-adopt technology that can be scaled across rural areas. This innovative approach represents a major advancement in modern agriculture, blending tradition with science to create a more sustainable and profitable future for rice farming.
