Corn is not suitable for outdoor hanging storage

In some regions, after shelling the corn, farmers hang the double-ear grains outdoors to speed up moisture reduction and ease the pressure on storage facilities. However, this practice comes with more drawbacks than benefits. Hereâ€™s why: First, it damages nutrients. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight can degrade essential nutrients such as fats, crude protein, vitamin C, vitamin B-2, and even certain beneficial compounds like lutein. Corn left in the sun for extended periods not only loses significant nutritional value but also develops a poor taste and reduced palatability. Second, it increases the risk of toxin absorption. When corn is stored outside, it can absorb harmful substances present in the airâ€”especially in areas near industrial zones or chemical plants. Consuming such corn may lead to health issues, and in severe cases, could even increase the risk of cancer. Third, it promotes mold growth. During rainy seasons or in humid conditions, the moist environment encourages the growth of Aspergillus flavus, a fungus that produces aflatoxinâ€”a powerful carcinogen strongly linked to liver cancer. Fourth, it makes the corn vulnerable to pests. Outdoor storage exposes the grain to insects, birds, animals, and even rodents, which can contaminate the crop through their waste and damage the quality of the harvest. The proper way to store corn is to quickly shuck and thresh it after harvest. Once dried to the point where it feels dry, snaps when bitten, and feels brittle, it should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Regular inspections are essential to ensure quality and prevent spoilage. This method not only preserves the nutritional value but also minimizes health risks and ensures long-term storage safety.
