Soybeans should not be re-seeded>
Soybean, commonly known as soybeans, is a widely cultivated crop around the world. Many farmers have a traditional practice of planting soybeans year after year without rotating crops. This continuous planting leads to several problems, such as slow growth, stunted plants, yellowing leaves, increased vulnerability to pests and diseases, and smaller grain sizes, all of which significantly reduce yield. According to field surveys, soybean yields can drop by 20% to 30% or even more in such cases. The main reasons behind this decline include:
Firstly, the occurrence of diseases and pests is more frequent. Soybean fields that are planted repeatedly create ideal conditions for pathogens like bacterial spot, black spot, blight, and yellow blight. Nematodes, in particular, cause serious damage and are difficult to control once they become established in the soil.
Secondly, the toxic effects of root exudates from previous soybean crops play a major role. Soybean roots release certain acidic substances into the soil, which can form harmful compounds like ferrous salts. These substances interfere with the normal nutrient uptake of subsequent soybean crops, leading to poor root development and reduced activity of beneficial Rhizobium bacteria. As a result, plant growth is hindered, and overall productivity declines.
Thirdly, the excessive use of nutrients, especially phosphorus, can lead to an imbalance in soil nutrients. Continuous soybean cultivation depletes available nitrogen and phosphorus, which negatively affects plant growth and development.
To prevent these issues, it's essential to avoid planting soybeans consecutively. Implementing a crop rotation system with other crops for at least three years is highly recommended. This helps restore soil health, reduces pest and disease pressure, and improves long-term soybean yields. By adopting sustainable farming practices, farmers can maintain both soil fertility and crop productivity over time.
