Corn left in the sun for too long not only loses its nutritional quality but also develops a poor taste, making it less palatable. Second, it increases the risk of toxin absorption. When corn is stored outside, it can absorb harmful substances present in the air, especially in areas near industrial zones or chemical plants. Consuming such corn may lead to health issues, and in severe cases, it could even cause cancer. Third, it promotes mold growth. During rainy seasons, the moist environment encourages the growth of Aspergillus flavus, a fungus that produces aflatoxin—a powerful carcinogen linked to liver cancer. This poses a serious health risk, especially if the corn is consumed without proper inspection. Fourth, it attracts pests. Exposed corn is vulnerable to insects, birds, animals, and rodents. Additionally, rat droppings and other contaminants can pollute the grain, further reducing its safety and quality. The correct way to store corn is to promptly shuck and thresh it after harvest. Once dried to the point where it feels dry to the touch and is brittle when bitten, it should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Regular inspections are also necessary to ensure the grain remains safe and free from contamination. By following these steps, farmers can maintain the quality and safety of their corn for longer periods.
