After the onset of winter, the central region of Yuzhong once again reaches the harvest season for coriander. Traditionally, people store coriander in bags, but this method often leads to poor preservation. The fluctuating temperatures during storage make the plants vulnerable to rot and spoilage when there's a sudden temperature increase. This results in a significant loss of both commercial and nutritional value. To address these issues, the author has developed a more practical and effective storage method. Below are some key points that farmers can follow to improve their storage outcomes. First, timely harvesting is crucial. The ideal time to harvest coriander is after the beginning of winter, but before the arrival of the "Minor Snow" solar term. Harvesting too early may result in underdeveloped stems and leaves, leading to lower yields and reduced profits per mu. On the other hand, harvesting too late can cause the stems and leaves to become fibrous, affecting flavor and quality. Additionally, as temperatures begin to drop, unexpected cold spells can cause frost damage, making it harder to store the crop effectively. Therefore, farmers should adjust their harvest schedule based on local weather conditions. Second, selecting the right storage location is essential. A sunny, sheltered area in the courtyard is ideal, such as a wall facing away from the wind. A 30 cm layer of fertile loam is placed behind the wall, and the size of the storage area depends on the quantity of coriander being stored. Bricks are used to build walls around the structure to block strong winds. The mortar between bricks must be well-sealed to prevent air leaks. For northern walls, no base is needed—farmers can use the side of a house instead. The southern wall should be about 50 cm high, gradually rising to around 1 meter at the northern end, forming a slope that allows natural sunlight to warm the storage chamber. Third, proper planting and management before harvest are important. Before harvesting, farmers should water the fields and let them dry for a day. Then, using iron shovels, they carefully dig up the plants, ensuring not to damage the roots. The roots should be buried at an appropriate depth. After transplanting, a small amount of water is added, and once it’s absorbed, another light watering follows. Cover the top with bamboo poles or wooden sticks and place a film over it. As temperatures drop, additional insulation like straw mats or blankets can be added. During the day, the cover can be removed to allow warmth, and it should be replaced at night. Once stored, watering is usually unnecessary. If daytime temperatures exceed 20°C, the film can be lifted slightly for ventilation to avoid overheating. In deep winter, covering the south, east, and west sides with corn stalks provides extra insulation. By following this method, coriander can remain fresh for a long time, making it easy to sell when market prices are favorable, especially around the Spring Festival. This approach not only reduces storage costs but also increases economic returns significantly.
