Freshly harvested chestnuts have a high respiration rate, which leads to the production of significant amounts of heat. Therefore, they should not be immediately placed into bags for storage. Instead, it is common practice to mix the damp chestnuts with other fruits and store them for about a month first. After this initial period, they are then transferred into plastic film bags for long-term storage.
To prevent mold and fungal growth, it's important to clean the bags thoroughly before use. Additionally, the chestnuts should be soaked in a 500-fold dilution of thiophanate-methyl solution for 10 minutes. After soaking, allow the fruit to dry completely before placing them into the bags. The ideal size for the film bag is 25 kg, and the thickness of the film should be around 0.05 mm.
When using the bags, you can choose to either punch small holes or leave the opening open for ventilation. If you decide to punch the bag, make small holes (about 0.05 mm in diameter) on both sides. However, if you don't punch the bag, it's recommended to open the top at irregular intervals to ensure proper air circulation. This step is especially crucial during periods of high temperature and humidity.
By following this method, the overall quality of the chestnuts can be significantly improved. It helps reduce the occurrence of rot, sprouting, and weight loss, ensuring better preservation and higher marketability of the product.
