Yi Yang Lin interplanting garlic increase income>
The Yang Linzhong intercropping method has proven to be highly efficient, with each acre producing 500–1000 kg of garlic sprouts and 100–300 kg of mature garlic. This system can generate up to 2,000 yuan in income per mu. In addition to the economic benefits, practices like fertilizing and mulching during winter also contribute positively to the growth of poplar trees.
To implement this intercropping, a 3-year-old poplar plantation is selected with a spacing of 5 meters between rows and 3 meters between trees. Garlic varieties such as large white bulbs, free from damage or disease, and top-cultivated types are chosen. The most commonly used variety is Baguazhou garlic. Previously, crops like spring corn, soybeans, and leafy vegetables were interplanted, and they were harvested by mid-August.
Soil preparation involves deep plowing to a depth of 15–20 cm, combined with the application of 2000–3000 kg of organic fertilizer per acre and 50 kg of 45% compound fertilizer. The field is then finely tilled into 2-meter-wide ridges, ensuring the soil is soft and well-drained with proper ditches dug for water management.
Autumn garlic is typically sown from early August to mid-September. Harvested garlic should be planted slightly earlier, while garlic sprouts and bulbs can be harvested later. Seeds are sown in holes, with 2–3 cloves per hole, spaced 17–20 cm apart and planted 3–4 cm deep, at a rate of 120–140 kg per acre. Larger cloves are sown separately for easier management. After sowing, the soil is covered, and a base watering is applied to ensure good moisture and cover the film.
About 7–10 days after planting, the seedlings are uncovered. Once they emerge, irrigation should be managed carefully—watering only when necessary and avoiding overwatering before winter. After the Spring Equinox the following year, when the plants show signs of stress, another round of watering (Qingshui) is done. If no topdressing was applied before winter, 15–20 kg of urea per acre is added during watering.
Once the garlic returns to its mother bulb, it enters the rapid growth phase of the sprouts. During this period, both above-ground and underground parts grow rapidly, making it the most critical time for nutrient uptake. Fertilization and irrigation must be intensified. It usually takes 17–21 days from the first sprout to harvest. Two topdressings are recommended: the first during the tail-throwing stage, every 7–10 days, with 15–20 kg of urea per application. Watering is done every 7 days to maintain soil moisture. Three to four days before harvesting, watering is stopped to prevent the sprouts from becoming brittle and breaking easily.
Five to seven days before harvest, the garlic bulbs begin to swell. After harvesting, root growth slows down, but the garlic weight increases sharply. Immediately after harvesting, one round of watering is done, along with 10 kg of urea per acre. During the period when the sprouts are vulnerable, pests can be controlled using 90% trichlorfon diluted 800–1000 times or 75% phoxim diluted 500 times.
