Why do chicks start drinking after drinking water?
After hatching, the first step in caring for chicks is to provide them with water. This is a critical physiological need because some of the yolk sac remains in their bodies, and it contains essential nutrients that support their early development. The absorption of this yolk is highly dependent on adequate hydration. Without sufficient water, the yolk may not be fully utilized, which can lead to poor growth and health issues.
Offering water immediately after hatching helps stimulate the digestive system, promotes the excretion of meconium, and supports overall metabolism. It also aids in the efficient breakdown and absorption of the yolk, giving the chicks a stronger start. Delaying water intake can cause the yolk to remain undigested, increasing the workload on the chick’s gastrointestinal tract and potentially causing digestive problems.
Another important factor is the underdeveloped digestive system of young chicks. Their gut is short and their digestion is weak, making it difficult to process the yolk efficiently. It typically takes 3 to 5 days for the yolk to be fully absorbed, so feeding too soon or too much can overwhelm their system.
