Vigilance against 28 Ladybugs>
The 28-spot ladybug is a common pest that causes significant damage to vegetable crops, particularly eggplants and potatoes. It's also known as the potato ladybug or eggplant ladybird. Recent field studies in rural areas have shown that this pest poses a serious threat to eggplants. In one survey, out of 100 plants, 30 to 40 adults were found per plant, with an average of one egg per plant, and about 30 plants showed signs of infestation. The damage rate reached as high as 80%. With the increasing cultivation of potatoes in our country, the damage caused by the 28-spot ladybug has become more severe, making it essential for farmers to take preventive measures.
First, identification is key. The most distinguishing feature of the 28-spot ladybug is the presence of 28 black spots on its back, which sets it apart from other ladybugs. Taxonomically, it belongs to the order Coleoptera and family Coccinellidae, commonly referred to as "flower sister" or "flower wife."
Adults: The potato ladybug is larger, measuring 7-8 mm in length, with a reddish-brown color. There are four dark spots behind three at the base of the wing, but they are not aligned. One to two pairs of black spots appear on the joints of the wing covers. In contrast, the 18-spot ladybug is smaller, about 6 mm long, with a yellowish-brown color. Its four dark spots are almost in a straight line, and the black spots do not connect along the wings or body. Eggs: Potato ladybug eggs are larger, around 1.4 mm, initially yellow and turning brown later. They are loosely arranged. Eggplant 28-spot ladybug eggs are smaller, about 1.2 mm, starting off yellowish-white and turning brown. These eggs are tightly grouped. Larvae: Potato larvae are longer, around 9 mm, pale yellow-brown with many black thorns. The 28-spot ladybug larvae are shorter, about 7 mm, starting pale yellow to white with white thorns. Pupae: Potato pupae are larger, about 6 mm, pale yellow with two tails, while eggplant 28-spot ladybug pupae are smaller, around 5.5 mm, and yellow-white.
Second, the pest’s life cycle is important to understand. In North China, the 28-spot ladybug typically has one to two generations per year, with two peak periods in late June to early July and mid-August.
Third, the damage it causes is severe. Both adults and larvae feed on leaves, creating a mesh-like pattern, and in heavy infestations, they can strip the mesophyll, leaving only the veins. Additionally, they damage fruits, tender stems, and flower parts. Infested fruits become hard and bitter, greatly reducing their quality. Beyond eggplants and potatoes, they can also harm beans, melons, and cruciferous crops in severe cases.
Fourth, effective control methods are crucial. Agricultural control includes manually capturing adults and removing egg masses, especially during their dormant stage. Since the 28-spot ladybug lays eggs on both sides of leaves, careful inspection and removal of infested leaves can help reduce population. Chemical control should be applied during the egg-laying and larval dispersal stages. Recommended insecticides include 4.5% beta-cypermethrin, 2.5% kanthaverin, 50% phoxim, 50% malathion, and 48% chlorpyrifos. It's important to spray both sides of the leaves thoroughly to ensure maximum effectiveness.
