The 28-spot ladybug is a common pest that causes significant damage to vegetable crops, particularly eggplants and potatoes. It is also known as the potato ladybug and eggplant ladybird, and it belongs to the family Coccinellidae. This species has become a serious threat in rural farming areas, especially where potato cultivation has expanded. Recent field studies have shown that on average, 30 to 40 adults per 100 plants were found, along with one egg per plant, and about 30% of the plants showed signs of damage. The infestation rate reached as high as 80%, prompting farmers to take immediate action.
One of the most distinguishing features of the 28-spot ladybug is the 28 black spots on its back, which sets it apart from other ladybug species. In entomology, it is classified under the order Coleoptera and family Coccinellidae. It is commonly referred to as "flower sister" or "flower wife" due to its bright coloration and appearance.
Adults of the potato ladybug are larger, measuring between 7 to 8 mm in length, with an auburn coloration. They have four dark spots behind three at the base of the elytra, which are not aligned in a straight line. There are one or two pairs of black spots on the joints of the wings. In contrast, the 18-spot ladybug is smaller, around 6 mm long, with yellowish-brown coloring. Its spots are more aligned and do not extend to the wing joints. The eggs of the potato ladybug are larger, approximately 1.4 mm long, initially yellow and turning brown over time. They are loosely arranged. The 28-spot ladybug’s eggs are smaller, about 1.2 mm, starting off pale yellow-white and turning brown. These eggs are tightly grouped together.
Larvae of the potato ladybug are longer, around 9 mm, with a pale yellow-brown body covered in spines. The 28-spot ladybug larvae are shorter, about 7 mm, and start off pale yellow to white, with white spines. The adult beetles differ in size and color: potato ladybugs are larger, pale yellow with two tails, while the eggplant 28-spot ladybugs are smaller, yellow-white in color.
In northern China, the 28-spot ladybug typically has one to two generations per year, with two peak periods—late June to early July and mid-August. Both adults and larvae cause damage by feeding on leaves, creating a mesh-like pattern or even consuming the mesophyll entirely, leaving only the veins. In addition to leaves, they attack fruits, tender stems, and flowers. Damaged fruits become hard and bitter, significantly reducing their quality. Beyond eggplants and potatoes, this pest can also harm beans, melons, and cruciferous crops in severe cases.
To manage the 28-spot ladybug, farmers can use several control methods. Agricultural control includes manually capturing adults and removing egg masses. Since the eggs are brightly colored and easy to spot, they can be removed from both sides of the leaves. Chemical control should be applied during the egg hatching and larval dispersal stages. Pesticides such as 4.5% beta-cypermethrin, 2.5% kanchan, 50% phoxim, 50% malathion, and 48% chlorpyrifos are effective. It is important to spray both sides of the leaves thoroughly for maximum coverage. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to preventing large-scale infestations.
