As daylight decreases, it takes about 70 to 80 days for the winter fur to mature, indicating that this process is a short-day response. Conversely, after the vernal equinox, when daylight increases, the winter fur sheds and summer fur regrows. This is a long-day response, showing how light duration directly influences fur cycles. Through controlled artificial photoperiods, scientists have been able to manipulate the reproductive and moulting cycles of leeches, revealing underlying biological patterns. By adjusting light exposure, it's possible to accelerate the shedding of summer fur and initiate winter fur growth. However, the rate at which winter fur develops remains constant, regardless of when the light is shortened. Once the equinox signal is given, it takes approximately 80 to 90 days for the full development of winter fur. In recent years, with a better understanding of photoperiodic regulation, researchers have successfully applied these principles in leech farming. For example, once summer fur has developed, an artificial autumn signal can be used to trigger winter fur growth. After 80 to 90 days, the winter fur becomes fully mature. This technique allows farmers to control the timing of fur maturation, improving production efficiency and quality. Nutrition also plays a critical role in the health and productivity of leeches. Essential nutrients such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and moisture support vital functions like metabolism, growth, reproduction, and moulting. The quality and variety of feed directly impact the overall performance of leeches. A well-balanced diet ensures optimal growth, reproduction, and fur quality. Malnutrition during moulting can lead to problems such as incomplete fur growth, white velvet, hair-eating, and self-biting, all of which negatively affect fur quality. Environmental factors, including temperature and weather, also influence fur development. Temperature affects the density of the fur, while light intensity impacts its depth. Poor weather conditions may result in shorter or uneven fur growth. Additionally, different leech varieties and individual differences play a role in fur quality and moulting timing. High-quality leeches come from fine breeds, and some types mature earlier than others. Female leeches often mature faster than males, and certain traits can lead to earlier winter fur development. Understanding these variations helps in optimizing breeding and raising practices.
