The study found that primary tumors induce the activation of Smad3 transcription factors in spleen cells by releasing beta-type transforming growth factor into the blood, allowing Ter cells to be produced. Ter cells were scarcely present in organs such as liver, lung, kidney, and lymph nodes, and Ter cells were not produced in cancer mice excised from the spleen, suggesting that the enlarged spleen is an "armpit" lurking with a cancer-promoting black hand.
