In order to prevent cattle from suffering from "cold" dehydration, it is essential to provide them with what is known as "quadruple water." These include physiological thermoregulation water, nutritious nourishing water, blood-activating bone water, and beneficial mother-fetus water. These specialized waters play a crucial role in maintaining the health, growth, and overall well-being of cattle, especially for cows and beef cattle.
Physiological thermoregulation water can be further divided into cooling and warming types. When cows consume large amounts of dry feed but lack sufficient water, their bodies may struggle to maintain a balanced internal environment, leading to gastrointestinal discomfort, reduced rumination, and even heat stress. This imbalance can cause symptoms such as slow digestion, loss of appetite, and increased body temperature. In severe cases, it may lead to skin thinning, dull eyes, persistent coughing, and even hair loss.
To manage this, several methods are recommended:
1. **Cold Drinks**: Provide clean, cold water promptly to relieve heartburn and cool the lungs and spleen. This helps regulate body temperature and supports digestion.
2. **Guided Drinking**: Mix 0.3–0.6 kg of rice shochu (or 0.2 kg of urea) with 5–7 kg of cold water, allowing the cow to drink it gradually. This not only encourages hydration but also aids in the fermentation of feed, reducing excess heat production and helping the cow regulate its body temperature naturally.
3. **Mixed Drinks**: Soak dried straw in water for 3–5 hours to increase its moisture content, which can meet up to 30–40% of the cow’s daily water needs. This method ensures that the cattle receive adequate hydration, preventing issues like indigestion, poor excretion, and low energy levels.
In addition to these cooling methods, warm drinks can also be beneficial:
1. **Hot Drinks**: Heat water to around 40°C and place it in the feeding tank. This helps warm the stomach and improve digestion.
2. **Vertical Drinking**: Add 30–50 grams of salt or 100 grams of soy sauce per kilogram of hot water. This encourages more drinking and helps balance electrolytes.
3. **Drinking with Feed**: Mix feed with hot water to make it easier to digest, boost appetite, and raise body temperature.
**Nutrient-Enriched Water** involves providing cattle with specially formulated water that contains essential nutrients. This includes:
- **Nourishing Water**: Made from fat-rich feeds like peanut cakes, sesame cakes, and cottonseed cakes, mixed with distillers’ grains, hay, and salt.
- **Protein Tonic Water**: Prepared from bean cakes, dregs, or pastes, mixed with sugar and soaked in water.
- **Trace Element Water**: Contains zinc, iron, calcium, and magnesium, which are vital for immune support and overall health.
**Blood-Activating Bone Water** is another important category, used to improve circulation and strengthen bones. It includes soups made from herbs like loquat leaves, ginseng, and angelica, as well as bone broths from dog, goat, and pork bones.
**Mother-Fetus Water** is specifically designed for pregnant cows. It includes herbal soups made from ingredients like Angelica, Codonopsis, and Motherwort, all of which support the health of both the cow and the developing fetus. These waters should be prepared 2–3 times during winter to ensure optimal care for pregnant cattle.
By implementing these water strategies, farmers can significantly improve the health, productivity, and longevity of their cattle, ensuring better growth and higher yields.
