Cute Flower Eranthemum nervosum R. Br.
Eranthemum nervosum, commonly known as the cute flower, is a small shrub that typically grows to a height of 0.7 to 1.5 meters. It is usually hairless or nearly hairless, with leaves that are ovate to elliptic in shape. The leaves measure between 10 to 20 cm in length and 5 to 8 cm in width. They have a long, pointed tip and gradually taper at the base into a petiole. The leaf margins feature faint, blunt teeth, and each side has approximately 10 lateral veins that are slightly raised. The plant produces terminal and axillary spikes, with sepals that are obovate, measuring about 1 to 1.5 cm in length. These sepals are acute at the top, veined, and covered in fine hairs. The bracteoles are lance-shaped, around 5 mm long, and have a nearly white, pubescent surface. The flowers are tall, reaching about 6 mm, with a blue corolla that measures roughly 3 cm in length. The flower tube is bent, and the stamens extend beyond it. The fruit is approximately 1 cm long, and the flowering period occurs in spring. This species is native to Haikou, a city in Hainan Province, China.
Eranthemum nervosum is widely distributed across southern and southwestern China, as well as in India. It thrives in warm, humid climates and is often found in open woodlands or along forest edges. Due to its attractive blue flowers and compact growth habit, it is sometimes cultivated in gardens for ornamental purposes. The plant's unique appearance and vibrant color make it a popular choice among horticulturists and nature enthusiasts alike. Whether growing wild or in cultivation, Eranthemum nervosum adds a touch of beauty to any landscape. Its ecological importance also makes it a valuable species for biodiversity conservation in its native regions.
