The breeding behavior of Nile tilapia, Oriya tilapia, and Mozambique tilapia is quite similar, as all three species exhibit nest-building habits. Males typically construct and guard nests, while females lay eggs inside them. These fish are polygamous and can spawn multiple times throughout the year. Under moderate water temperatures, they reach sexual maturity at around six months of age. A 200-gram tilapia can produce between 1,000 to 1,500 eggs per spawning event. Males that are ready to breed usually weigh over 150 grams.
When water temperatures rise above 20°C, mature males display distinct secondary sexual characteristics. For example, male Nile tilapia develop a reddish-brown coloration, while male Oriya tilapia turn dark purple. Their dorsal and caudal fins also take on a pinkish or reddish hue. These visual cues help attract females and signal readiness for mating.
During the breeding season, males actively dig and maintain nests, often chasing and encouraging females to enter. Once a female lays her eggs, the male fertilizes them and guards the nest until the fry hatch. Spawning can occur continuously for about 20 days, provided the water conditions remain favorable. However, higher fish density tends to reduce reproductive activity, likely due to increased competition and stress. This makes it important to manage stocking levels in aquaculture settings to ensure optimal breeding success.
