Improved palatability of fermented feed

Improved Palatability of Fermented Feeds Raw materials such as bran, sweet potato vines, peanut leaves, rice straw, corn cobs, grains, and chicken manure—often unsuitable for direct feeding to pigs—can be crushed and fermented using an appropriate amount of starter culture. Through the process of glycolysis, these materials are transformed into a biological feed that is rich in flavor, has a pleasant aroma, and offers a mild sweetness with long-lasting nutritional value. This type of feed not only improves the pigs’ ability to adapt to biological feed but also significantly reduces grain consumption, making it a more sustainable feeding option. When using coarse material fermentation feed, it should be properly combined with conventional concentrates. Pigs should be fed with thicker, more concentrated meals rather than frequent, diluted feedings. The feeding frequency can be adjusted based on the ambient temperature. In summer, the feed can be slightly diluted to help meet the water needs of the pigs. It is recommended to feed them five times a day, avoiding thin feeding in winter to prevent heat loss due to excessive urination. Additionally, the feeding of coarse materials should be adjusted promptly depending on the pigs' health and appetite. Monitoring the amount of natural feed intake is essential to ensure that feed in the trough doesn’t reduce the pigs’ interest in eating. For suckling piglets, the fermented coarse feed can be soaked in cold water for several hours. After fine grinding, the mixture is filtered through a fine steel mesh and fed to the young pigs. A small amount of fried soybean flour can be added to enhance the aroma and stimulate the piglets’ appetite. The coarser material that remains after sieving is suitable for older pigs. For weaned piglets, adding sugar-rich ingredients like cooked mink skin, carrots, citrus peels, or sugar scraps to their feed can make the food more appealing. This not only encourages better feed intake but also helps increase their average daily weight gain, supporting healthier growth.
