How to use urea to feed sheep>
Urea is an effective protein supplement for sheep, offering a cost-efficient alternative to traditional protein sources. One kilogram of urea is equivalent to approximately 2.88 kilograms of crude protein, which is comparable to 5.6 to 6 kilograms of soybean meal. Properly supplementing sheep with urea can significantly improve weight gain and overall performance. But how should you manage the dosage?
One common method is to mix urea directly into the concentrate feed. The recommended amount is 1.5 to 2% of the total concentrate. This ensures even distribution and prevents overconsumption. Another approach is to create urea bricks, which are easy to store and administer. A typical recipe includes 40% urea, 47.5% salt, 10% honey, 2.5% sodium phosphate, and a small amount of cobalt. These bricks can be offered as a mineral supplement.
A third option is to add urea during silage preparation. For every 1,000 kg of green feed, you can mix in 5 to 6 kg of urea. This helps preserve the feed while providing a steady source of nitrogen for rumen microbes.
When using urea, it's important to follow key guidelines. First, always monitor the quantity. The daily dose should be around 0.02% of the sheep’s body weight, not exceeding 1% of the dry matter in the diet. For adult sheep, this translates to about 10–15 grams per day, while young sheep over six months old should receive 6–8 grams. However, start with just 1/10 of the full amount on the first day and gradually increase over 10 days to avoid toxicity.
Never feed urea alone or dissolve it in water. It should be mixed with other feeds. Also, avoid giving water immediately after feeding urea—wait at least 30 minutes. Lastly, do not provide urea to sick or weak animals, as they may not metabolize it properly.
By following these guidelines, you can safely and effectively use urea to enhance your sheep’s nutrition and growth.
