Calcium deficiency is a growing global health concern that affects millions of people worldwide. Most dietary calcium comes in the form of insoluble salts, which are difficult for the body to absorb. According to modern nutritional standards, adults should consume at least 800 mg of bioavailable (ionized) calcium daily, while infants need around 1,000 mg. Preventing calcium deficiency involves ensuring sufficient intake through food and, if necessary, supplements. When choosing calcium supplements, it’s important to avoid harmful ingredients and select products that are safe and effective. The form of calcium in the diet is less important than factors like age, health status, and overall diet. Granules that dissolve easily are often more effective, and organic forms like calcium citrate are better for those with low stomach acid. Finally, calcium supplementation is a long-term commitment.
