New Method of Raising Pigs - Raising Pigs>
The floor-raising cage system is an advanced pig farming technique widely used abroad, offering numerous benefits. First, it allows for efficient temperature and humidity control through proper ventilation and heating systems, ensuring pigs stay comfortable in both cold winters and hot summers, which supports their healthy growth. Second, this method improves feed efficiency by using automatic drinkers and feeding systems that allow pigs to eat freely. Waste from the pigs falls through the cage floor onto the ground, reducing contamination of the feed and keeping the environment cleaner and more hygienic. Third, the system makes it easier for farmers to monitor and manage the pigs. Fourth, it helps in disease prevention and treatment due to better hygiene and easier access. Lastly, it increases barn space utilization and reduces labor requirements. Each pig can be housed in a 5-square-meter area, allowing 8 to 10 pigs per unit, and a farmer can efficiently manage up to 400 to 500 pigs.
The design of the cages is carefully planned. A typical pig house covers 60 square meters with two rows of cages, each containing three tiers. Each individual pig cage has an area of 5.2 square meters, equipped with a 250-watt infrared heat lamp, a duckbill-type drinking fountain positioned 20 cm above the cage floor, and a 30 cm high feed trough. The automatic feeding system is constructed from 23-gauge angle steel and galvanized iron sheets, with a wide opening that allows easy filling. The front of the feeder is designed with a sloped structure for convenience. An activity pendulum is also included; when pigs touch it, feed is released, encouraging natural feeding behavior.
According to experimental data, only 2.1 kg of feed is needed to produce 1 kg of weight gain, making this system highly efficient. However, due to the limited space in the cages, pigs should not remain in them for extended periods. It is recommended to keep them in the cages from around 80 to 90 days of age or until they reach over 50 kg, as prolonged confinement may lead to limb deformities. This system offers a balanced approach between efficiency and animal welfare, making it a popular choice among modern pig farmers.
