The raised-cage pig farming system is an advanced method widely used abroad, offering numerous benefits for both pig health and farm efficiency. This technique involves raising pigs in elevated cages rather than on the ground, which helps maintain a cleaner and more controlled environment. One of the key advantages is the ability to regulate temperature and humidity within the cage. By using proper ventilation and heating systems, the environment can be kept warm in winter and cool in summer, creating optimal conditions for pig growth and development. This not only improves their overall well-being but also enhances weight gain. Another benefit is improved feeding efficiency. Automatic drinkers and feeders are used, allowing pigs to eat freely without contamination. Waste from the pigs falls through the cage to the ground below, keeping the cage and feed clean and reducing the risk of disease. This system also minimizes feed wastage and ensures better hygiene. Managing pigs in this system is also easier. Farmers can easily observe the animals and monitor their health, making it simpler to detect any issues early. The controlled environment also supports better disease prevention and treatment, as the pigs are less exposed to pathogens. In addition, this method increases barn utilization and reduces labor requirements. Each pig is provided with about 5 square meters of space, allowing 8 to 10 pigs per unit. A single farmer can manage up to 400 to 500 pigs efficiently, depending on the setup. The design of the cages is carefully planned. Each pig house has an effective area of 60 square meters, with two rows of cages, each containing three tiers. Each individual pig’s cage measures 5.2 square meters and includes a 250-watt infrared bulb for warmth. A duckbill-type drinking fountain is placed 20 cm above the floor of the cage, while the automatic feeder is made from galvanized iron and angle steel. The feed inlet is wide, with a front that is higher at one end, making it easy to fill. An activity pendulum is also included—when pigs move, it triggers the release of feed, encouraging natural feeding behavior. According to experimental data, this system uses only 2.1 kg of feed per kilogram of weight gain, showing high feed conversion efficiency. However, because the cage area is limited, pigs do not have space to exercise. Therefore, it's recommended to raise them in the cages for no longer than 80 to 90 days or until they reach around 50 kg. Keeping them in the cages beyond this period may lead to limb deformities due to lack of movement.
