Winter cut plums must be carefully>
Li Shu entered a high-yield season after seven years of cultivation. During this phase, the primary goal of winter pruning is to maximize yield per unit area while strictly controlling the occurrence of bald spots on branches and the back of the tree. The main principle of winter pruning involves a combination of cutting and strengthening, ensuring a balance between vegetative growth and fruit production. Pruned branches are redirected to focus on fruiting, with fruit-bearing structures being prioritized.
In the winter pruning method, the main and lateral branches at each level are cut back by about half. Bouquet-like fruit branches and short fruiting spurs should be appropriately thinned to prevent weakening the tree's overall vigor. The main branch head should be drooped, and the space between branches should be connected. In some cases, the main and lateral branches can be pruned back slightly to maintain structure.
Fruiting branches should be directed toward the main fruiting cluster, which should account for over 90% of the total fruiting capacity. Attention should be given to branches that are 2 to 3 years old, as early development is crucial. Older branches tend to become barren and difficult to rejuvenate. The key to overcoming age-related decline and baldness lies in regenerating and revitalizing weak branches. A common technique is the "remove one, keep three" approach—keeping strong, middle, and leaving some branches intact.
Each level’s main and lateral branches should be shortened by one-third, while the second and third lateral branches should be cut back by half. It's important to remove long, dense, overlapping, or crossing branches to promote better air circulation and light penetration. Developmental shoots and those with minimal flowering should be managed through techniques like “cut first, then release†or “cut and then shorten,†helping to cultivate medium-sized fruiting shoots.
This careful and strategic pruning ensures that the tree remains productive, healthy, and well-structured, supporting consistent high yields over time.
