Papenburg of Laval University in Canada reported that patients with H1N1 flu (A stream) may have a 45% chance of infecting their families, much higher than previously estimated (4% to 18%). (ICAAC 2010. Abstract: V-423)
The investigators enrolled 42 families, including 43 patients with primary influenza A and 119 close contacts, and were diagnosed with secondary infection by PCR and serological tests.
The results showed that 34 (29%) of the close contacts had both fever and cough symptoms, 53 close contacts were diagnosed with a stream of influenza, 34 families had secondary infections, and the incidence of primary and secondary cases occurred. The mean interval was 3.9 days, and only 5 (9.4%) of the cases had no symptoms, and children under 7 had the highest risk of secondary infection.
